BG Pool 1K Chlorinated Rubber Swimming Pool Paint is a premium-quality, single-pack pool coating designed for suitable new or old concrete swimming pools and compatible previously painted Chlorinated Rubber finishes.
Unlike a two-pack epoxy system, BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber is supplied as a single-pack coating with no hardener mixing required. It provides resistance to swimming pool chemicals and salt water and is designed to provide a practical maintenance coating system where Chlorinated Rubber is compatible with the existing pool surface.

Single-Pack Pool Paint System
BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber is a 1K single-pack coating. There is no separate hardener to measure or mix into the paint before application.
The product should be stirred thoroughly with a flat-bottomed paddle or suitable mechanical mixer until uniform before application.
BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber is available in different pack sizes depending on the selected product and colour. Check the individual product size before ordering.
Important – Check Your Existing Pool Coating First
Chlorinated Rubber and Epoxy Pool Paint are not interchangeable coating systems.
BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber is designed for:

How Can I Identify Existing Chlorinated Rubber Pool Paint?
BG Coatings’ Chlorinated Rubber Application Guide describes an acetone rub test that can assist with identifying an existing coating.
When a small area of an existing coating is rubbed with acetone, a Chlorinated Rubber coating will typically soften, become sticky or begin to dissolve. An Epoxy coating generally does not soften in the same way.
This test should be considered together with the condition and history of the existing pool coating. If you are uncertain about the result, contact BG Coatings before proceeding.
How Much Chlorinated Rubber Pool Paint Will I Need?
Under normal circumstances, the BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber Application Guide gives an average spreading rate of approximately
7–9m² per litre per coat, depending on surface porosity, texture and profile.
The Technical Data Sheet gives a theoretical spreading rate of approximately
7.8m² per litre at 45 microns dry film thickness.
Practical coverage can be lower once surface condition and application losses are taken into account.
Do not estimate pool paint quantity from the litres of water your swimming pool holds. The coating quantity is determined by the actual internal surface area being painted and the number of coats required.

How Many Coats of Chlorinated Rubber Pool Paint Are Required?
The number of coats required depends on the pool surface and whether the pool is already coated with compatible Chlorinated Rubber.
- Previously painted compatible Chlorinated Rubber:
generally 2–3 coats. - Bare, new or old unpainted concrete or render:
generally 3–4 coats.

Surface Preparation
Correct surface preparation is critical to the performance of any pool coating.
The surface must be sound, clean and free from oil, grease, wax, dust, dirt, mildew, suntan oils and other contaminants before painting.
Previously painted Chlorinated Rubber surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and may require light sanding with approximately 100–120 grit abrasive to provide a suitable surface profile before recoating.
New and bare concrete requires a different preparation process. New concrete should be allowed sufficient curing time and must be correctly prepared before coating.

Applying BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber Paint
BG Pool Chlorinated Rubber may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray.
For roller application, BG Coatings recommends an approximately 11mm nap mohair roller. A long-nap roller should not be used because it can deposit excessive coating and contribute to blistering.
For airless spray application, the Application Guide specifies a
15–21 thou tip range with a minimum tip pressure of approximately
150 bar / 2200 psi.
The coating is generally ready for use after thorough stirring. For bare concrete, the first coat may be thinned with approximately 5% BG Industrial Thinner to assist penetration and adhesion. Subsequent coats are applied ready for use in accordance with the Application Guide.

Application Conditions
Recommended environmental conditions for application are:
- Surface temperature: minimum 10°C to maximum 40°C
- Dew point: surface temperature should be at least 3°C above dew point
- Ambient temperature: minimum 10°C to maximum 40°C
- Relative humidity: maximum 85%
Avoid application to very hot surfaces in direct sunlight. BG Coatings also recommends avoiding application where rain is expected within approximately 4–6 hours.
How Long Before I Can Refill the Pool?
The final coating must be allowed adequate drying time before the swimming pool is refilled.
- Summer: allow at least 7 days before filling the pool
- Winter: allow at least 14 days before filling the pool
Filling the pool before the coating has dried adequately can damage the appearance of the finished coating, including cloudy or uneven colour.
Environmental conditions affect drying, so always refer to the current BG Coatings technical documentation before returning the pool to service.
Pool Water Balance and Coating Aftercare
Correct swimming pool water balance is important for protecting the Chlorinated Rubber coating and maintaining the swimming environment.
BG Coatings’ Application Guide recommends the following operating ranges:
- pH: 7.5–7.8
- Total alkalinity: 160–180 ppm
- Calcium hardness: 280–340 ppm
- Free chlorine: less than 3 ppm
