Rendered walls can look tired long before the render itself has reached the end of its useful life. Fading, patchiness, hairline cracking and chalky residue are common on exposed homes, boundary walls and commercial façades. Render is not simply another painted wall. Start with the render, not the colour
Before choosing paint, establish what is already on the wall and what condition it is in. New render, previously painted cement render, acrylic render and repaired sections can each need a different preparation or primer approach. The coating system has to suit the substrate as well as the finish you want.
Run a hand across the wall. If a powdery film comes away, the existing coating or render surface is chalking. Check for flaking paint, bubbling, staining, cracks and areas that sound hollow when lightly tapped. These signs do not automatically mean the whole wall needs stripping, but they do mean painting should not begin until loose or unsound material has been dealt with.

Preparation determines the finish

Choose a suitable weather window. Avoid painting when rain is expected before the coating has had time to dry, when the surface is excessively hot, or in strong winds that carry dust onto wet paint. Early morning moisture can also affect application. Check both the air temperature and the wall itself, especially on sun-facing elevations.
Common problems to avoid
The most frequent issue with rendered walls is painting over a surface that has not been properly cleaned or stabilised. Chalking, dust and loose paint form a weak layer between the wall and the new coating. The wall may look acceptable at first, then begin to fail where that weak layer lets go.
Another common problem is using an unsuitable coating over an unknown previous finish. If there is any doubt about compatibility, assess a small test area and seek product advice before committing to the full wall.
